How do I get a smart-chip (EMV) card?
Your next card will include this technology! Alaska USA is sending members new cards with smart-chip technology over the coming months to help improve the security of card transactions. All credit cards will be reissued by September 2016. All debit cards will be reissued by April 2017.

What is a smart-chip (EMV) card and why is it safer to use?
Smart-chip technology (EMV) is a chip that is now embedded into cards to help reduce fraud. When making an in-store purchase using the smart-chip, a unique one-time code is generated and provided to the merchant. Your card number is not provided to the merchant. As a result, if the merchant’s payment card data is compromised, the information can’t be used to replicate your card.
Although this smart-chip technology cannot prevent card compromises entirely, it is anticipated that smart-chip cards will substantially reduce the frequency of account compromises. You will continue to benefit from the zero-liability guarantee so fraud that occurs on your credit or debit card is covered.
I received a smart-chip card. Will my PIN be the same?
Yes. Unless you recently asked for a new card number, the reissued cards will come with the same PIN number.
Does this new card protect purchases made online or by phone as well?
The smart-chip card is designed to prevent fraud for in-store purchases by creating a one-time code for each transaction instead of providing your card number to the merchant. Anytime you provide your card number directly to a merchant or biller, there is a possibility that your card number may become compromised.
I’m traveling internationally soon. Will I need this new smart-chip card?

Are there additional fees associated with these cards?
No additional fees!
How do I use this smart-chip (EMV) card?
When prompted during your transaction, insert the card face up with the chip end first into the card reader. Follow the prompts to complete your purchase. Don’t forget to take your card once the transaction is complete.
This store does not accept smart-chip cards. What do I do?
We understand that not all stores currently support smart-chip cards. To allow business owners time to convert to a new system, our cards will initially continue to include the magnetic strip.
As always, you have zero liability for fraud that occurs on your debit or credit card.
I forgot my card in the machine at the store. What do I do?

How do I request a card without this smart-chip technology?
The smart-chip technology is designed to substantially reduce the likelihood of fraudulent transactions and is mandated by Visa regulation. As a result, Alaska USA no longer offers Visa cards without smart-chip technology
Will ATM cards have a smart-chip?
No, ATM cards will not be receiving smart chip technology as they require the use of a PIN which provides additional security. Additionally, ATM cards are as widely accepted for in-store purchases.
