Life on the road—worry free

In many cases, insurance is required for an RV or motorhome.

• If it’s motorized and you can drive it down the road, you’ll need the same amount of liability coverage that you’d need for a car or truck.
• If you purchased your RV with a loan, your lender will usually require insurance.
• You’ll need insurance if you live full-time in the RV as your home or rent out the vehicle when you’re not using it.

Insurance may be optional if your RV is designed to be towed rather than driven. For example, a fifth wheel, pop-up or travel trailer may not require insurance unless you financed it with a loan and your lender requires insurance. Your vehicle’s liability insurance most likely will cover the trailer while being towed, however it does not provide protection for damage to your trailer. A separate motorhome & RV policy can provide this coverage.

You may be able to get a discount if you’re a homeowner; or a mature driver. It’s also possible to save on your overall insurance bill by bundling policies, like your homeowners and RV insurance, with the same carrier. Your broker can identify the types of discounts you might qualify for.

Your insurance premiums are based on a number of factors, including how often you use your RV or motorhome, how many miles you drive each year, and where you store it when it’s not in use. If you only use your RV for a few months a year, then you may pay less for insurance than someone who lives in their RV or uses it year-round.

Insurance companies have different methods for assessing risk, but most of them consider these factors:

• Your driving record, age, and driving experience
• The types of vehicles you drive
• The number of miles you drive each year
• Your location, usually based on your ZIP code

Insurance companies may also look at your credit history to assess your risk, but this is not allowed in some states.
