Medicare ID Card Fraud (7/17/2018)
Fraudulent Medicare activity costs taxpayer billions of dollars. As a result of efforts to reduce Medicare fraud and identity theft, recipients will start receiving new Medicare ID cards between now and April 2019. Your new Medicare ID card will use a unique ID number rather than your social security number, but it’s still important to safeguard your card.
The Consumer Finance Protection Bureau recommends the following:
- Keep your Medicare card in a secure place.
- Don't share your ID number with anyone other than your health care team.
- If someone calls and asks for your Medicare information, hang up. Medicare will only call you if you've called and left a message or if a representative said that someone will call you back.
- Check your statements carefully and log into MyMedicare.gov to spot possible fraud and billing mistakes.
- Report suspicious activities by calling 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).

It’s time for a new savings plan. (4/27/2018)
Have you heard that 57% of Americans have less than $1,000 in savings, and 39% have no savings at all?
That’s a shocking statistic, and even if you don’t fall into one of those groups it’s fair to say that we could all do a better job of setting aside some savings. Here’s a few tips to get you started.
- Start a spending journal
This may seem overly simplistic, but if you’re trying to get a better hold of your finances, journaling is a smart and easy way to accomplish this. Keeping track of your daily expenditures for a full calendar month should give you a pretty good idea of where your money is going—and probably give a you more than a few ideas for making improvements in your spending habits.
- Set realistic goals
Be clear and certain about how much you want to save, and what you’re willing to sacrifice in order to reach your goal. This will set you up for savings success Wanting to save $10,000 is great, but sometimes starting with a smaller goal of $1,000 will give you a more achievable target, and a great feeling of success and momentum when you hit it.
- Use automatic transfers
Set up an automatic transfer from your checking to your savings and take the whole process of setting money aside off your to-do list.
- Give yourself a daily allowance
Once you’ve identified your monthly disposable income after bills and savings, divide the total up by the number of days in the month and you’ve got yourself a daily spending limit. You can save any remaining money you have at the end of the day, or roll it over for a bigger purchase down the line.
We hope some of these tips will help you reach your savings goals this year. Here’s to a financially fit 2018!
- Start a spending journal
